As a young piano prodigy, Clara Wieck was named “Royal and Imperial Austrian Chamber Virtuoso,” Austria’s highest musical honor. At age 21 she married composer Robert Schumann, with whom she had eight children. She was mentor to, and gave world premiere performances of numerous works of, Johannes Brahms; she accompanied legendary violinist Joseph Joachim in over 200 recitals. Her lifetime spanned Beethoven to Stravinsky. Clara Schumann was one of the most remarkable musicians of the 19th century; examining her life is a revelation.
